I found out about this soccer tournament being organized in
the Alaska St. Quarter (neighborhood) of Kumba Town during June and July, so I
decided to register two teams in the tournament. The teams are CFDP 1 and CFDP
2, as they consist of coaches, volunteers, and players associated with our
organization here in Kumba. I am playing on one team and coaching the other.
Today, the team on which I am playing played our first match of the tournament,
which was also the opening match for the tournament. Unfortunately, we lost the
match 1-0, but it still was a cool experience for me.
Below is a picture of our team’s starting line-up before the
game. Just a cool side note—The guy pictured in the bottom row farthest to the
right is named Karawah. He’s older now, probably almost 40, but he used to play
regularly with the Cameroonian National Team. He had the unfortunate experience
of traveling with Cameroon to Britain to compete in the [year] Olympics, but
was the last man dropped from the team when Rigobert Song, one of the best
players in the history of Cameroon, decided at the last minute that he wanted
to partake in the competition. That year, Cameroon went on to win the gold
medal…
